WE DAY 2010 - FAQS

We Schools in Action program

What is the We Schools in Action program?
Free The Children’s We Schools in Action program inspires a generation to care about social justice through We Day and then provides the practical tools needed to turn that inspiration into action.

We Day is a one-day event, full of energy and inspiration. But it also launches a movement that generates real social change, starting locally and then spreading internationally. To achieve this goal, each school group attending the event makes a commitment to follow a year-long program for change including one local and one global action and sharing these with Free The Children and the community of We Schools.
Do we have to make the commitment to We Schools in Action to attend the event?
No, but seats for We Day are always in high demand. Priority will be given to schools that have committed to be a part of the year-long program.
What is Adopt a Village?
Adopt a Village is Free The Children’s unique holistic development program. Through this multi-faceted approach, children and their families are truly empowered to break out of poverty. Click here to learn more.
Our school will only be able to raise a little bit of money for Adopt a Village. Can we still participate?
Yes! Every dollar counts. We encourage you to raise as much money as you can, and our youth coordinators are always available with cool fundraising ideas, but there is no minimum fundraising amount to take the commitment to change.
What are in-services?
To build capacity within school groups and to help move them from inspiration to action, Free The Children provides hands-on training following We Day to one educator and three students from each school. The in-services equip schools with the tools and resources they need to develop and implement plans of action around the local and global issues they have identified as most important to them.
When are the in-services?
In-services will take place during the fall of 2010. Exact dates will be made available at the start of the 2010-2011 school year.
Is the in-service mandatory?
The in-services provide a platform where educators and students receive the tools, knowledge and resources to have successful campaigns. Educators are provided with classroom activities to guide them through the year-long program, and students are given social issues and leadership training. While not mandatory, the in-services are highly recommended.
Will the in-service be different than last year?
While it will serve a similar purpose, providing educators and students with the tools, knowledge and resources for successful campaigns, they constantly evolve to be relevant to both new schools and groups returning to the year-long program.
What are the two reports we have to submit? Are they long?
Report 1 involves filling out an online action plan, and is the equivalent of approximately two pages of text. Report 2 is a chance for you to share your photos, videos and written reflections on the year-long program with hundreds of schools across Canada.

Event Inquiries

Where can I find information on event logistics, such as lunch, transportation, seating, etc.?
Logistics for all the events will be posted on this website. You can check back here or, if you register for tickets, we will e-mail you updates as they come.
Who will be speaking and performing this year?
Speakers and performers will be announced via the website as they sign on. Check back often for updates.
How old do I have to be to volunteer at the event?
You must be at least 15 years old and have parental authorization (for those under 18) to be a volunteer at We Day.
I am bringing a student in a wheelchair. Will this be a problem?
Of course not! All events are held at wheelchair accessible facilities. However, we request that you let us know beforehand so that we may accommodate any special needs. Please e-mail either weschoolstoronto@freethechildren.com or weschoolsvancouver@freethechildren.com.

Technical Difficulties

Our school wasn’t in the drop down menu under our board in the system, or our school is grayed-out, what should I do?
First, check with the staff to be sure someone hasn’t already registered your school to attend the event. If you’re not registered, continue with the registration process, filling out your school’s information manually.
I am having technical difficulties entering my information into the system, what should I do?
Contact either wedaytoronto@freethechildren.com or wedayvancouver@freethechildren.com, depending on which event you’d like to attend.

Extra Ticket Requests for Schools

Can I have extra tickets?
Demand for We Day tickets is extremely high. As a result, we are unable to offer any extra tickets.
Does the maximum number of seats available include educators?
Yes.
As an educator, what happens if I switch schools next year, but registered my old school to attend We Day?
The seats remain allocated to the school that was originally registered. Another educator will become the primary contact for the group, and will escort the students to the event. If you’d like your new school to attend, you’ll have to register again.
I registered for tickets, but haven’t heard anything from Free The Children. How can I be sure my registration went through?
If you received a verification e-mail after completing the registration process, your request for tickets has been received. After June 1, 2010, Free The Children’s Event Team will be in touch to let you know if your school has received seats to We Day 2010.

If you did not receive a verification e-mail, contact either wedaytoronto@freethechildren.com or wedayvancouver@freethechildren.com.
My school is not from Toronto or Vancouver; can we still attend one of the events?
Yes! Your school will be responsible for covering transportation to and/or accommodation before or after the event, but all schools are welcome.
Does it cost money to attend We Day?
No, tickets are free. Your school is responsible for covering supply teacher costs, busing and/or transportation and accommodations, if necessary.
There is one more student at my school that would like to come, can we have another ticket?
No. Unfortunately we must uphold a strict maximum number of seats per school. This is to ensure that as many schools as possible are able to attend the event.
We have never participated in a program with Free The Children or Me to We before, can we still attend?
Absolutely! The event is for any school whose students want to change the world!
